Rockfish Opener 2015 - Newport

Got a late start Sunday morning and arrived at the launch around 7:30a. Parking lot was totally empty

Made it on the water at 8a and it was pretty greasy in the bay. Decent outgoing tide made the ride easy.

The bay was loaded with the red crabs. These gulls sitting just outside the entrance looked like they were feeding on them. They were just sitting and bobbing their head below surface every couple of minutes.

Made my way to one of my spots and the Reds didn’t disappoint! This slob taped out at a hair over 25”. No scale but felt like a solid 8 or 9lbs.

Had three more Reds all over 20” when the weather kicked up and I lost the school. The wind picked up fairly strong for about 20 minutes along with steady rain. Then it broke to calm conditions again until I left. Hit some other spots and rounded my limit out with some Barber Poles and decent size Coppers by 11a. Water temp never dipped below 62 degrees.

Nice! Gives me good hopes on the rockfish over there! I saw the red crab in the harbor last weekend too. Looks like the weather wasn't too bad after all. Good job on the pig reds!
