Ever weigh your weights ???

So I was messing around with some used weights I got and decided to weigh some brand new ones. I found it interest that all five of the 6 oz weights came in at 5.15oz and the 4oz weights came in at 3.85 oz. I checked my scale with other marked weights and it was spot on. Just a little surprised by the difference in the 6oz.

I have done this before and found that every sinker I had was well under the stated weight sometimes by more than a 1/2 oz. Makes you wonder how much weight you have been ripped off for over the years.

5.88-5.96 ounces for my 6 ouncers
and 4.61 ounces for my 5 ouncers

I'm sure someone who pores a lot of lead can explain this, but that adds up over time.

It's likely that there's other metals in the leads. I've bought cheap Chinese made butterfly jigs in the past and they were pretty light for the size.

lead

You got me curious...so I got a few new pieces of lead out...
I bought all my lead from LeadMasters...as you'll see, it might be a good idea to find his booth at the next Fred Hall Show. Jim is always across the aisle from Bob Sands Tackle...usually one of the busiest aisles in the show.
8oz. torpedo sinkers ranged from 234 to 236 grams..that's over 8oz.
3oz. torpedoes were from 81 to 82 grams...that's about 2.9+oz.
3/4oz. egg sinkers were 22 to 23 grams...that's about 0.8oz.
Leadmasters usually has the best price on lead at the show... so stock up.

I wouldn't mind them being underweight for those prices, I'm getting ripped off here locally!

I do pour my own sinkers. The molds are made by Do-it Co. and Hiltz.
Unless someone makes their own molds (which is not inexpensive to do), they most likely use molds from this company, or Hiltz.

I don't see how you can cheat, if you are using their molds. Perhaps it is easier to round of the numbers, like (4) instead of 3.85 in the cavity of the mold. After all the sinker is for sinking the bait and not doing scientific experiments.

Since the sinkers are sold per bag or individually rather than per weight there is no misrepresentation.

I don’t have affiliation to anybody who sells sinkers; I am just providing another perspective to consider.
