La Jolla on Veterans Day

Went out today with my fishing buddy Justin. Launched at 630 made bait and we're off for battle. Went deep and then south...not much to speak of until....I am throwing a blue and silver crocodile and BAM...bending fish on...my first yellow ...sweet. Takes me on my first ever sleigh ride circle around. At color dang it...I have a monster Bonita...get the beast up to gaf and stick him but oh no...me sea dog comes out of nowhere grabs the Boni, my line and my GAFF...straight down...I hang on hoping the stupid dog will let go but nope runs my line out and I have to cut as the reel empties...I am an idiot and hate those damn dogs!!!! My bro got a Calico that the neighborhood dogs cut in half and at the end of the day we rolled in with a single rockfish....I love living in So. Cal! Great day fishing at the price of losing a bamboo gaff...I will be back!!!!

Wow those dogs are really aggressive that sucks he swooped your gaff too, and your line... Not an idiot though. It's just what ya gotta deal with when you go to la jolla is what i've learned. Atleast it happened on a boner and not a yellow lol

Hey Dennis it was good talking to you at the launch while loading up. Loosing one of those beautiful bamboo gaff totally sucks. Those seals are not only relentless but crazy. Today not only did I loose my first six extra large greenies to them. But then two different seals took both my deep (170') drop loop and my top flyline 5 seconds apart. The drop loop one apparently took the circle hook too and then took me on like a 1/2 mile sleigh ride. I didn't want to loose 100 yards of braid. Tried pulling straight to the reel hoping the 40 lb fluorocarbon would break but no luck. Finally he tries to tangle me up in kelp and a lobster buoy line. I keep pulling as hard as I could and finally the line is loose, after cutting trough the kelp I find the circle hook missing the barb end and the rest of the hook is now almost straight. That is the first time I have had a seal take the hook instead of just pulling out the bait or leaving just the head. Seals Suck!

@FISH11 The last time I went on the 6th they were hooking themselves as well. I too have never seen that before. I hooked two dogs and one I actually reeled almost all the way to the yak before he popped off. I kinda thought they were smarter than that.

Those damn dogs. Sorry about your gaff, but it does give you a reason to buy another. Also, I have been fooled by my share of bonita thinking they were yellows. They do give a good fight on the lighter stuff!!
