Uni to uni is popular...

or just use a swivel, like other people who don't know the knot science. I always use a swivel.

So Adi, do you use mono backing to swivel to braid to swivel to leader line?

I would join the spectra to mono backing with an Albright or Uni-to-Uni. You probably aren't going to get spooled down that deep fighting anything from a kayak. Tie it once and you won't see that knot again until it's time to clean the Spectra.
An Albright or Uni-to-Uni is a good choice for joining the Spectra to a mono top-shot. For this application, where the knot will pass through the guides more often, a small diameter knot with short tags is important. I prefer using the Albright because of the smaller diameter. You can also put a dab of glue on the tag ends to enable them to pass through the guides more easily.
Using a swivel or a ring is a viable option when joining Spectra to a fluorocarbon or heavy mono leader. I often use an Owner #4 solid SS ring or a 130# Spro swivel between the Spectra and the leader. It's easier to use a swivel than trying to tie an Albright when on the water. The swivel/ring method also allows you to quickly change out pre-made leaders and rigs.

Doug, out of curiousity, what type of glue would you use on the knot. I've
heard of using glue, but have never done it.

I'm using an albright with the Spectra to Fluoro or mono and haven't had one fail.
But the glue might be better for going through the guides...

oops, sorry - I was referring to connecting braid to to the floro leader. I always use the swivel. And that's because I can't tie Unis, Albrights, all that complicated stuff...

Joey and the gang at Squidco tie mono backing and spectra. That's about once a year deal, when I'm putting the new braid.

sure have learned a lot from this thread but would like to know. the guys that claim they can't tie knots, what knot do you use to tie on the swivel?

I prefer the daiwa sealine SL-X40HA instead of the 30. I like the 4:9 gear ratio, fast enough to get bit and good cranking power. Others prefer the 6:1 SHA, but for me not enough cranking power on a bigger fish. I use a bimini in my spectra and a worm knot in the mono (not the spectra). It's very compact and you never have to cut the bimini to re-tie

I used the improved clinch knot at first, and lost nearly every big strike. Then I learned the uni-knot and have used it on everything ever since, hooks, swivels, line-to-line, mono, spectra. On light line I double it before tying the knot, 6-10 loops on light line, 4 loops on 30lb mono. It is very easy to tie on the water. There may be better knots but I've had success with this one and I only need one knot for everything.

Yeah - what John said. Is the consensus Uni to Uni? I've never had much faith in my Uni to Uni, though I have yet to put it to the test.

I've had great success using an Albright Knot for joining spectra to mono or fluorocarbon line. When joining Spectra (30/50/65) to a larger line (30/40/50 fluorocarbon) I always use a minimum of 15 to 20 turns of the Spectra.

Lots of people also use a uni-to-uni for joining spectra to mono/fluorocarbon.

With either method it is important to tie the knot carefully and make sure that the turns lay smoothly. An Albright, if tied correctly, is a very small diameter knot.

What's the cost differential with the new packaging compared to just a spool?

Has there been an increase in price?
