No, they were (are?) jumping clear out of the water, and yes, it was quite amusing. Most of the ones I saw didn't make it completely out of the water but at least a few did. It sounded like one little belly flop after another.

Now that would be a sight. One of those things that makes being in a kayak so cool - you'd probably never notice it if you were buzzing around in a 26' Parker. :-)

BTW, it dawned on me that I was wearing a sweatshirt with a mola mola on it when I read your post.
