I went out Sunday and tried to find the pipe again. There's some buoys out in the area and a bunch of kelp near by, but I never did find the darn thing. I really need GPS to mark spots once I find them.

If there was kelp growing nearby you were either way to the inside or nowhere near the Pipe. How deep were you?

And yes, fishing the Pipe without GPS can be a pain. The trap buoys help a lot to keep you in the right area. Interestingly enough, there isn't nearly as many traps on the Pipe this year, though there was more early in the season. Some years it's a royal pain to weave through all the traps. This year is perfect, just enough to keep track of the pipe without your GPS.

Ed I started looking in about 40' or so at low tide, I seem to remember that's about where it started last time I found it. There was a decent sized patch of kelp around, and the half dozen or so trap buoys got me thinking I was around the right place. Perhaps I wasn't out far enough?

^ Its been a while since I've been out there, but I'm pretty sure if you head out to 40' and line up the ?south? barber pole and the hotel (or was it the lifeguard station) you can find it. Might have to zig zag back n forth but its pretty easy to follow down to 80' and more.

I like to start in the 45-50' range. The pipe is very distinct there.

Casey, it wasn't too bad when I launched. I couldn't see the jetty once I got out, but I could see any boats coming. That's all I really worry about. By 9:00 or so you could see the shoreline. Without GPS and/or the buoys it would've been hard to stay on the pipe though. I've been out there when you can't see jack and it's not fun.

I hope it's decent weather this weekend, I'm gonna try and head out again. Looks like I'll head a little deeper to start looking and take note of the barber pole/shore lineup once I find it.
