DP 5/18

Launched around 7am for the fish with friends tournament run by Dana Point Kayak and Jet Ski.

Weather didn't start out to great, it was rather windy throughout the morning, but it finally cleared up to become a very nice day. Starting trolling a mac to look for some WSB... no luck. Switched it up looking for some bass and got a PB 4lb 7oz calico on a bighammer. Caught a few more bass then the bite slowed on the plastics, so I went to flylining sardines.

The first sardine is in the water... About 20 seconds later something hammers it and starts to run. As I get it closer to the kayak I cant believe it, but its a small yellowtail. First ever yellow from the kayak, not to mention it won me the tourny. Just shy of 25 inches, it was small, but I was very happy.

The bass were really hitting live bait today in the afternoon. Video to come.

Sweet that is too cool!
That doesn't happen too often at Dana Point. Quick, go buy a powerball ticket!

Nice catch! Do you keep your fish overboard on the stringer? I was kinda worried about doing that cuz of sharks or sea lions.

Will wait for your video, congrats on the win

Nice catch. It's rare to get a YT outta Dana. Much less in The middle of May. Congrats.

Nice catch, Charlie. I could feel your adrenalin rush 75yds away and when you said it was a YT I thought you were suffering from sun stroke! Beautiful fish and a well deserved win for the pot. I got more than my $10 worth just watching your reaction. May this be the first of many you bag this summer.

A YT at Dana?

During a tourney?

Won the jackpot?

Heck yeah!

I bet that felt good.

Hey everybody, lets fish Dana this weekend. The WFO bite is ON!

I couldn't believe it was a yellow in the middle of May either...... right place right time I guess.

As promised (albeit a bit late) here is the video. I'm still working on my editing skills so bear with me on this one. Not sure whats up with the slight "fog" I think some water condensed on the inside of the lens area.

I don't usually leave the stringer in the water for long periods, just every now and then to keep the fish somewhat colder. I would be beyond mad if a seal had stolen the yellow off my stringer.

tough one to cut loose

since it's the tourney winner , much less your first off yak . . caught some on a 3/4 boat out of diego , similar size . broke my heart after seeing the size of fillets . considering my credit card bill for boarding fee , let alone my fuel bill to make commute . congrats on taking the contest .
