Carrying a Hand held gps is not a bad idea if you already have one, but it would be for backup purposes only. Your gps/fishfinder should be your primary way to navigate. Most of us carry vhf also mostly to talk smack to each other

Ok I guess I was going overboard then. I thought it was all must have stuff. So I'm good to go unless I can't handle not listening to all the smack talk. Guess I'll start practicing flipping my yak over and getting back on. How well do your phones work, like when you're out fishing LJ?

I know a lot (most?) of the fishfinders nowadays have built in GPS. I thought the reason for the VHF/GPS combo handhelds was to be able to call for help on the distress channel and transmit your GPS location so the Coast Guard can come find you? Am I over-thinking this also?

I was thinking the same thing. At least the radio to call for help. So I've got the compass,GPS ff combo, and my cell is supposed to be my lifeline?

I use a handheld as a primary also... I use it for Fishing and Hunting (some people like me, like those inland topo maps also) and I take when I go on my brothers boat (and others/cattle boats) to add or give spots to my brother.

They both have there advantages, but i prefer handheld. beside I dont have to split screen my screen...lol
