I have an Elite 4. Good little unit. But "little" is the operative word. Next unit will be much much biggggggger. Squinting sucks.

I'd go bigger than 5, but that's just me. It's all about your budget. A hand held GPS will do just fine for ya.

These are my two options that I have been looking at. I like the Lowrance systems but Humminbird, for the same price, is offering a system that has structure mappings.

Good enough for the Kayak without breaking the bank, great little units, and at BPS you can order with the 6 month pay option and take the sting out of the initial purchase of the unit.

A buddy was going to sell me his HDS 5 but he decided to keep it when he realized what he had. Anyway hope this helps.

Lowrance Elite 7

I would say Lowrance systems are pretty good.
I got a Lowrance Elite 7 Gold from marinescreens.com

It's a really great unit and I find the interface very straightforward. Their price was lower than any other by like $50 and they are really great people... Even called me a few days after delivery to see how I liked it! Try this unit out... You will definitely be surprised by the value.

Didn't want to spend the $1500 for HDS-7 LSS , So I went with the elite 5 DSI/ GPS . Cost a lot less than side scans. Can't wait to try it out.
FFY.
