Feb 5-7 BOLA Report

I made a way too short trip to BOLA with 2 buddys to deliver engine parts to the Hotel Villa Bahia. We left in the dark Tuesday morning and after an uneventful ride through Mexicali and south we got to the hotel. The Villa Bahia is a cool relaxed place right on the beach. Met Roger the owner, Ritchie the mechanic, Shaun the panga capt, Mecedis the cook, and Roman one of the maintenance guys. Great crew. We arived in calm conditions early enough to launch the kayaks and catch a few spotties and cuda in front of the hotel. We ate some dinner and hit the hay hoping the weather would stay calm and we could get a panga out to the islas th next morning. Nope, the wind was howling. We did a bit of exploring up around Punta La Gringa. The wind backed off in the afternoon and we made an easy run to the north end of Isla Smith with Capt. Shaun. Its not the season for YT there but we were still hoping. Ended up with some nice cortez sculpin and goldspot bass. Headed home the next morning. Like I said, too short. Can't wait to get back when things are warmer and fishier. Mike

Now are those the same spots we have in our bays here, or different? They look a little different, bigger for sure.

I'd go there just for those golden spotties! Through Mexicali? did you go through San Felipe or cut over to the 1?

We crossed at Mexicali and drove down through San Felipe and Portocitos. The pavement ends a little ways south of Portocitos and its dirt until you get to the LA bay road that cuts off from the 1. Its a dirt road, but I thinkva car could make it if you were not in any hurry. We were in a big diesel 4x4 dodge duely so no problemas. I gotta say thats its difficult to drive passed Las Islas Encontadas and Gonzaga with out stopping.

As for the fish; Goldspots are in the same genus as calicos, sandbass, and spotted bass. They are a deeper water fish and we caught ours beow a hundred feet.

Pintos are in the grouper family and get much bigger and often arefound in shallow water.
