Backing down, is when you are getting spanked despite having ASSistance HANDED to YOU by the other team and then they give you mercy by busting off a fish that for sure would have broken you more you still whine about.

It's used when trying to gain line on the fish, it shortens the fight time. However it can be bad as you have seen. It's helpful when you have monster fish that are just ripping line off and not looking to stop.

The fish did not cause the boat to roll. The skipper helped in possibily sinking it(by turning wheel to sharp and not going forward in a timely manner). The boats scuppers were probably clogged with something!. Not uncommon to get three feet of water in the deck when backing down in less than calm waters.
