La Jolla Thresher 10.14.12 - Released
Third time out on the Outback; what a boat! Launched with the Middlebro at 630ish, & The Bigbro working (on a Sunday!)... Launch was OK. Made bait even though I was planning to fish with squid mostly. I just can't paddle over a bait ball and not throw in my sabiki... The macs looked good (they all do to me), so I pinned one on with a 2oz weight on 65 Spectra and ~5' of 50lb floro. Fished around for a while with squid and mac. Caught a few rockfish and sandbass and then the mac got picked up around 11pm near the surface, in about 120 ft of water. Sounded like a seal, but I saw it jump out... Turned on the camera and filmed the action (nice jumps and a dope sleigh ride caught on cam). Took about 30 minutes to bring to the yak. I tried to bring it up close and somehow pull out the hook or at least cut as close to the hook as possible, then I got slapped by the tail. Next round I cut the leader about a foot from the hook. Not feeling great about it, but couldn't do better... Not sure how big or how much it weighed; guesses are welcome! The middle bro was far so we didn't get to have a second cam. The footage turned out quiet nice and I will share once the bigbro does his editing magic. Here's a few snapshots: Cheers |

that's got to be a bit nerve racking. Nice C&R. that hook will rust out soon enough.

nice. hard to judge size but could be in the 60lb range.
easiest way to unhook them is to grab the tail and pull them on you, preferably upside down, then pop the hook out and let 'em back in. pretty simple.

This suggestion above is even more nerve-racking. 60lbs of muscle on your lap with sharp teeth on one end and a belt like tail on the other? "pretty simple". |

I've never landed one, got to fight one for about 2minutes and that was it. I can't imagine having all that meat in my freezer.

no, but it wont take a chunk out of your arm or leg like a mako could. a lot of people are nervous about sharks untill they catch one and are like "oh... he's actually pretty cool" and figure out they aren't all that dangerous as long as you dont get wreckless. Don't try to lip it or just reach in and drag it on board right away.

people have luck grabbing the tail...
...I don't. For some reason they always end up rolling out of my hands. I calmly take them by the pec fin and roll the on their back. They go dormant and are easy to deal with. This is one I released last year that way.

Video Added
I wanted to add the video to the original post at the top, but the "Thread Tools" didn't let me edit my post. I think we could do that before, right? If you guys know how, please let me know. Thanks!
Anyhow, here is the link the video (thanks to the Bigbro)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSkFB...1&feature=plcp Cheers |
