Thanks again Kurt. I knew to grab the tail, but solo it wouldn't have gone so well, thanks for lending a helping hand. Now I'm ready for the one that will fill both our yaks ;-) How different would the fight be if hooked in the mouth? maybe a lap shark like brad's almost was?
And Brad it's no biggie i was just messin. Did you get anything under those birds afterwards though? |

WTG on your first T! It's actually better to keep the smaller ones. A friend of mine (Fasha) used to date a girls who researched them in LJ and they are much like Calicos in the fact that the bigger ones are the breeders. Brad is right though....One should do you well for the year.

Leave the big ones to breed, eat the young!lol
Except for calicos. The biggest predator of baby calicos is big calicos, or so I am told. Why else make swimbaits in pumpkin. Preserve calicos, kill big calicos. ![]() The only thing I saw on that outside bird pile was a mola jumping, third of the day. Weird fish. First one looked like a shoe coming out of the water from my vantage point.

alot.... they are a different fish when mouth hooked...you can still beat up on the little ones, but you hook one over 200 in the mouth and you better have someone to hand it off to...they will hurt you.. |

Nice fish!! It's nice to know there is a support group of great guys willing to give another yakker a hand. Some day I'll have to break out the heavy gear and start hitting LJ again.

Hey Brad, Those Molas are really something. I think the only fish slimier is a Roosterfish. I was yo-Yoing on kelp and foul hooked a mola in the 200# range and it almost spooled me. I just put 6# calicos on the menu, this is how it reads......
Pan Seared 6 Pound Macadamia Nut Crusted Calico Fillet Peeky Toe Crab Risotto, Tatsoi Garlicky Spinach, Pinapple~Papaya Salsa, Ginger~ Soy Beurre Blanc lol Give up the tough guy act Brad! We all no your a LOVER not a FIGHTER! San Diego is doing you right....We've taken a bite out of the big APPLE! TL-Matt ![]() |

Great job on landing your shark.
I hooked a thresher today on the surface at 200' of water, 3 miles due west of Big Rock, on a flylined mackerel. Bit thru the 30# flouro in a heatbeat. Saw other tail slaps. There was a huge area of bait on the surface out there too, tons of big mackerel feeding. Calm and glassy till 1 pm. Last edited by blackcloud9; 04-23-2007 at 07:41 PM. |

yes the weather was MUCH better than expected, and I was glad to see 2-3 foot swells on the surf report. Matt, I am the kid that was talking to you at the Del Mar Fred Hall show with CJ Siebler.
