New Member needs some help - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Hi Everyone, new to kayak fishing and im not sure if the gear i already have is suitable for fishing off a kayak, or if it could be mixed and matched to be fitted for my yak. dont have all the specs for my rods yet but the reels i have to work with are a penn 500 jigmaster, abu garcia revo toro, curado 200g7, penn pursuit(discontinued baitcaster). will be fishing artificial dominantly untill i find a way to convert one of my strage units to a bait tank. im also curious if the yak i have is ok for the la jolla kelp beds. i have a perception sport caster 12.5 angler. i think its been fine for me in san diego bay as well as mission bay but dont want to be overwhelmed my first time to the kelp beds. any and all help is appreciated. tight lines! -Jesse Hernandez

well as your bait tank There are a few guys on here that a selling some good bait tanks for cheap or you can make your own for under $50 with some simple things you can get from walmart

welcome to the addiction... Many useful information on here. As your your rods and reels.. I'm no expert... but if it can catch a fish, I think it can work

welcome aboard, sounds like you are good to go, I would utilize the equipment on hand and get sometime OTW and adjust from there as you will find certain changes or different rigs as time goes on...we are assuming you have the necessary safety gear...
maybe you can hook up with someone the first couple of trips out...
and for cryin out loud wear a PFD!! good luck out there and be safe

Yakin: thanks good to know, prolly gonna hit up the guys at OEX and see what we could do.
GR6RR: yea they have been sea worthy for me on charters and what not. i guess my question for the rods are is there a certain length preference for yaks? cuz i have an 8' jig stick and a 7' rod that's lighter but has good back bone. also have a 300ej curado w/ 8' terez waxwing possibly at my disposal
mtnbykr: thats a good suggestion thanks ill most likely do that. i have all the necessary safety gear as well, i have had trips to my local lakes and have a good feel for what im doing. but theres always room for improvement.

how does that waxwing treat you I been thinking about getting a few

i love the waxwings. they have been pretty consistent for me at the coronado islands(not on my kayak). am yet to use them in the beds, as well as go to the beds(with my kayak). the Bone White, and Sand Eel have been good for me. i think the size is Senior. caught yellowtail, barracuda, and calicos with them. good luck!
