LJ at night is not that big a deal once you get over being in the dark, that is why they make 'night lights'... for people who are scared of the dark.

I actually like open water at night or zero-dark-thirty. Much more peaceful...and yes Oct. with red tide is a F-in trip watching all the blue/green lightning strikes and flashes of sea lions, sharks and others hitting clouds of bait balls under water.

NOT FOR BEGINNERS: Bring lights so PB'rs can see you, I carry a dive-flood light also good for flashing boats in the fog, be prepared for anything, radio and/or cell, file a paddle plan with friends or family so they know when to send out the cavalry, and definitely have someone experienced with you. (what good is a Newb if you get in trouble?)

Even then ... stuff still happens:http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lano...nty-coast.html
