Cancer is no joke.....PERIOD! I lost my grandmother to cancer and one of my uncle has stage 3 colon cancer. My sister was diagnosed with cancer at a very young age but because it was caught on time they were able to get her taken care of.
Did they say how you got it? Is it hereditary or is there a way to prevent it?

thanks for posting this, absolutely. And don't be afraid of what you might find, finding out early keeps your options open. And chances are allot of weird growths aren't cancer yet, but getting rid of them helps prevent them from going cancerous. I have had some stuff taken off my nose as well. Quick recovery to you Jimmy!

THe told me I needed to wear a hat that now protects the back of my ears and make sure to apply sunscreen in that area. Literally this is where your ear attaches to your head. I never would have thought that I would get something there, nor did I ever think to protect it too well. Now I do. Now he has advised me to come back every 6 months for check ups to make sure it does not have any long term affects. http://www.sungrubbies.com/index.htm Here's a great site to find a lot of Sun Care products.

I had one of those removed. The funny thing was that I had asked lots of docs about it over a long time period before a specialist diagnosed it from 10 feet away. All the others said it was probably nothing lol. The good news is that it is only very rarely a serious problem. The other good thing is that fishing is good after the surgery.
Notice the dark spot next to my nose? |

I had a bump on the bridge of my nose, right where it meets the eye. Had it for years, thought it was from my eyeglasses. Turns out it was Basal Cell, luckily. Had it cut out and and had several spots on the top of my head (yes, I'm bald), arms and even legs frozen off.
I lucked out, if it had been the bad kind I wouldn't be writing this because I waited so long to have it checked out. I would recommend everyone to bring it up with their doctors, just to be sure. |

Use a good sunscreen, wear your buff and see the dermatologist at least once or twice a year. Works for me.

I had 60 stitches in my face thanks to the same thing. You'll be in my prayers too.

There was a similar skin cancer awareness post on the Australian Kayak Fishing Forum a few years ago.
http://www.akff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2907 Quite an eye opener. Like most, I never thought about skin cancer when I was young. Even as my grandparents and mother were regularly getting little bits of their ears, faces and arms cut away, it just didn't sink in. It wasn't until getting severely sunburned on a long July fishing session at La Jolla did I really start taking it seriously. Although I know it won't prevent damage done over the years, I now never go out with sun protection. Long sleeves, long pants, big hat or head cover and zinc sun block on any exposed skin.

You better believe cancer is no joke.
No one knows that better than me and my son. Except for Matt(Moyer) and everyone else who cancer has affected. Word around the campfire is that because of the poor tournament turnout the last two years there may be no Moyer tourney this year. This is unacceptable. Please let Matt or Jim know that you support this cause and the tournament.

Sorry Jimmy to hijack but the cancer topic is my personal soapbox to preach from.We were helped out by proceeds from the Moyer tourney when this was our life.
My son is now 19 months cancer free(thank you Jesus)but we still have that in our thoughts constantly. Jimmy-prayers sent...

I'm not sure what the deal was last year with the tournament but there was a very low turnout for it and in years past there were over a couple hundred people involved. I too would hate to see the tournament not continue on so I will show my support and give my efforts to help keep it going. I think we all need to let them know how much we all want to keep it going. Thank you for the post, no worries about the Hi-Jack. My feeling is the more we all realize that we are not immune to possibly getting cancer of some sort, the more we ALL can make efforts to prevent it, or fight it better. I'm actually working on a Sun shade device that I will post up when I have it ready. This has caused me to become inventive if you will.
