if you leash yourself to your yak because of strong current or wind or whatever, DO NOT use it while launching or landing in the surf.

I agree with Low, you could use a leash in high wind and current conditions where you might not be able to catch up to your yak when separated. But do not attach it until you are clear of the surf zone.
