If it had fangs it is an orange mouthed corvina.

If it was caught locally it`s probably a shortfin corvina. I think orange mouth corvina are mostly caught in the sea of cortez, there use to be an epic orange mouth fishery at the salton sea years ago but i haven`t heard of any being caught in recent years.

This one is a orangemouth corvina These are shortfin corvina. This one is a seabass The fact his fish has no color bars, has a convex tail, with a silver mouth and fangs all suggest it's a shortfin corvina. Not to mention Shortfin Corvina like surface lures and flies. |

You're fish is definitely a short fin corvina. Don't worry about teeth, stripes, tail, ect. The 100% accurate way to tell between the wsb and short fin corvina is the wsb has a little ridge of skin running along the center of their bellies from the anus to between the pectoral fins. Wsb ALWAYS have this, corvina NEVER have this. Its tough to find a belly shot of wsb but you can see the belly ridge on this fish.
Its clear on the third fish from the left here. I couldn't find a good belly shot of a corvina. Next time some one catches a vina please take a clear shot of the belly and post it up. Mike |

this "zipper" along the belly, is the best way to ID WSB. the TWO LONG fangs on the Shortfin Corvina, are also the best way to ID that species. .

i have caught many Corvina in SD bay, some up to 30", but mostly 5-10 years ago.
and i have caught 1 juvenile WSB there, around 18" long, about 5 yrs ago. (mostly all caught on crankbaits, around Shelter Island area.) and caught a few Croaker in SD bay, on plastics. (ALL above from my yak.) and a few Corbina there, MANY years ago fishing from shore, with cut squid. here's a pic comparing these 4 somewhat similar looking fish: In order below: WSB, then Shortfin CorVina (side view), Shortfin CorVina (w/ Yellow Mouth & 2 FANGS), Yellowfin Croaker, and lastly, CorBina.... .
