You sure 6 will keep it up? I mean if you're going to do it, you gotta put enough or it's like having none.

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to just use pour foam, pour it in from the hatch to fill the bow and stern. if you use the light weight stuff you could fill to the hatches and have floatation plus it would take away space for water to fill.

This is better, IMHO...

https://www.amazon.com/GREAT-STUFF-W...rds=spray+foam

(It's only 3.99 at WalMart, and will fill a good portion of your hull)

Not sure....if I had a pool it would be cool to do a video....found nothing on youtube. Any volunteer Mythbusters out there? My kayak is a beater yak (might upgrade in the future but it works for now) weight is a little under 50lbs unloaded. Should keep it from submerging down deep at least. I have one thick monster noodle as well 5-6" diameter.

On a surf day out on it I'll flood it up at the beach to find out.

It just gives me piece of mind if a big shark took a curiosity bite and punctured my hull. If i can keep the yak from going totally submerged I can at least have a floating barrier to try and hide from some teeth.

I'm more worried about driving to and from the beach than sharks. If it were to happen I'd rather have a semisubmerged kayak vice no kayak and just me and my pfd.

Fish and game might call up the DEA when they look inside that hull looks suspicious.... also, just my theory but wouldn't the kayak ride higher? Making you more vulnerable to getting flipped by choppy conditions? But since they're not In the water yet it probably shouldn't affect the ride. Go out and report back 😃

If anything the kayak would ride slightly, but barely, lower. The kayak and its contents must displace a volume of water equal in weight. The addition of the noodles would add to the weight of the assembly with change to the exterior configuration of the body displacing the water.

Now, if you placed noodles UNDERNEATH the kayak instead of INSIDE, then the noodles would have net buoyancy due to their volume displacing the water, which weighs more per unit volume. The kayak would be lifted to the point that less water is displaced by the hull in the amount almost equal to the total volume of the noodle.

The reason for putting the noodle inside your kayak for safety is, if the hull fills with water, the kayak hull is no longer displacing the water beyond the volume actually occupied by plastic. The noodle inside the hull takes over displacing a smaller volume of water than the hull, but enough to keep the kayak from heading to the bottom.

think of it this way, if you are in a swimming pool and have a pool noodle, do you float higher when you hold the noodle over your head? No, because it is not displacing any water BUT it is contributing a small amount to the "assembly" of your body and the noodle. When you sit on the noodle it is submerged. The weight of the assembly has not changed, but WHAT is displacing the water HAS changed.

Sorry for the long-winded answer, but this is a pretty common misconception and the answer is not necessarily intuitive.

How many pool noodles do I need in my hull to make my kayak into a hovercraft?

the earth has to be flat, otherwise our kayaks would keep trying to slide to the bottom and we could never get back to shore. It's science dude

For those people who have spent $$$ on their kayak

I decided to put pool noodles in my hull & i also installed a floating bilge pump.

For the Bilge Pump installation i bought:

1 ) The bilge pump w/ a floating switch built in:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2) 90 degree though hull connector elbow:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3) Some 3m fast cure 4200, to keep the bilge pump in place

4) Used a 1" inch spade drill bit to make the hole through the kayak.
5)
I put a no return valve right after the pump so the water can not enter the kayak
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

6) 3/4 tubing to connect it all and some metal clamps

http://www.lowes.com/pd/Watts-3-4-in...Tubing/4330540

of course you will need a battery to connect it all .
How much is your kayak worth to you?

Can you afford to buy another outback, PA 12, PA 14, PA17?

Good preventive measures in case you start getting in water, in rough water. THe Bilge pump when connected straight to a battery should******* turn on by itself and start pumping out water.

it has one built in,

If it actually works is another question

it has a test knob in the back, just make sure it works before any trip.
