You don't have to shorten the rod, just shorten the sabiki.

That said, I have 3 in 3 different lengths. One is the full length I bought. The second is a "kayak length" I won in a raffle at Fred Hall. The third is one that Jason broke when he rolled in the surf, I took it & fixed it.

Shortening is not too tough. Trim the topmost piece to where it is just the flared end and a couple inches of the tube. Use 2-part epoxy and glue the small portion to the next one down & you are good to go
