Sabiki? any suggestions?
 

Ok, I give up,
I have been looking for a shorter Sabiki rod, and I keep finding the same 2 length rods, does anyone know where I might find a less lengthy model...?:rolleyes:

What size did you have in mind?

We cut down rods at OEX to make one thats a little over 4'

I use a Apache kids spinning rod i found at a walmart for $10.

I would like to check this out 5-5.5 ft ok, can I order online or do I have to come down there?

I was going to make one out of a bamboo stalk from my backyard. It is still drying in my garage, but then I realized I'd need to split it in half to cut through and sand smooth all the nodes and then glue it back together... it would be cool, but not enough spare time.

If anyone has DIY instruction for shortening a Sabiki rod, that would be a great thing to post here or maybe in the Innovations thread.

I have a 7' rod that is too long. I learned a while back that just having two or three hooks on the rig is better than having a full set so a shorter rod makes a lot of sense to me now. Live and learn.

That's a good point. I'm always struggling with all the hooks. And when I hook 3 macks on it, by the time I get my bait tube situated and the first one off the hook, the other two are gone.

You don't have to shorten the rod, just shorten the sabiki.

That said, I have 3 in 3 different lengths. One is the full length I bought. The second is a "kayak length" I won in a raffle at Fred Hall. The third is one that Jason broke when he rolled in the surf, I took it & fixed it.

Shortening is not too tough. Trim the topmost piece to where it is just the flared end and a couple inches of the tube. Use 2-part epoxy and glue the small portion to the next one down & you are good to go

Thus the hunt for a short sabiki rod, I didn't think of shortening a 7 ftr
and the bamboo idea has crossed my mind but you have to find the end,
and I am not too keen on the pvc idea, a buddy of mine has one, but if you get lucky on sabiki and get something fun or worthwhile pvc just doesn't do it...

BTW who makes the kayak length sabiki you have?

One thing I did was made one out of an old rod and pvc pipe. A buddy showed me this technique. Not the healthiest of ideas because you have to heat pvc, but it was cheap and easy.

What I did was found an old rod (my neighbor was throwing a broken rod out), cut off everything except the handle and reel seat and then got a piece of light pvc. I forget if I JB welded the pvc onto the rod, or gooped it on, but it was on there good. Then I drilled a hole where the line would go into the pvc and smoothed it out with a dremel and sanded it smooth.

Then at the end, I heated up the pvc and flared out the end and then sanded it out smooth to mimic the promar rods, which I now own. Then just put your reel on and game on! I gave the other rod to a friend but he moved back east.

Like I said it isnt the healthiest or enviro concious thing to do, but as long as you heat it and do not burn the pvc you should be ok ( I think...I twitch a lot now). I wouldnt do schedule 80, look for the real light stuff ( I think the thin kind rated at PSIs ) as you would have to heat the crap out of the 80 and it would be super stiff.

I use a PVC with Cork wrap handle, with my old Penn Jigmaster 500,

One good tip for you is on the flaired end of the PVC the mono line will cut and wear on the PVC, so I used some 15 minute epoxy on the flaired end on the inside 1/2", and 1/4" on the outside edge, and it's smooth like glass.....:cool:

Just roll the PVC untill the epoxy hardens no more line grooves from the mono on the PVC, and has held up very well for over a year now,:cool:

My 3/4" PVC Sabiki has caught some cool small Calicos ,
and a monster 2+ lb. Mackrel, Not much bend on the PVC though:D but it will actually cast somewhat decent.
