Many years ago, I was off La Jolla in a 13 foot Boston Whaler. Suddenly I was surrounded by a pod of gray whales. They were probably as curious about me as I was about them. We hung around each other for about 20 minutes.

Finally, one of them came up next to the boat and sounded. The tail raised out of the water about eight feet and barely missed hitting the boat as it slid into the water.

There was no aggression here but I am sure that if that tail fluke had even brushed my little boat, it would have flipped. It was a wonderful but scary event that I will never forget
