just don't chase KILLER whales
That's an awesome video!
Amazing the kayaker popped up like that. Wish I spoke Japanese so I could understand the commentary. Just to clarify... Grey whale watching from a kayak in SD is pretty safe. But killer whales are whole different story. If I saw a KW while on my yak, I would go the other way. I know they're occasionally seen around here, but pretty rare. Besides Sea World, last sighting of KW near SD that I know of was last summer outside the 9 mile bank. |
Many years ago, I was off La Jolla in a 13 foot Boston Whaler. Suddenly I was surrounded by a pod of gray whales. They were probably as curious about me as I was about them. We hung around each other for about 20 minutes.
Finally, one of them came up next to the boat and sounded. The tail raised out of the water about eight feet and barely missed hitting the boat as it slid into the water. There was no aggression here but I am sure that if that tail fluke had even brushed my little boat, it would have flipped. It was a wonderful but scary event that I will never forget Bob |
I'm pretty sure the was a japanese sports drink commercial or something of the sort.

Ya I think it was to but still somthing to think about if you ever incounter a killer whale

Yeah, think of Shamu at Sea World and compare his size to your kayak. Killer Whales are big, but not that big. The whale in this clip could have swallowed that kayak and rider whole. Way out of scale.

Last year my friend Primo and I ran into a pod of killer whales off of dana point. We didn't know if we should of been scared or not. If they had been that big we would of been scared.
