Are there any spots out of kings harbor?
I'm considering taking the yak out of kings harbor to try and fish around for a while. Primarily looking for bass and rockfish. I'm not asking for anyone's specific spots, because that is not cool, but is it worth going out? I'm hoping to find rock piles and maybe even a kelp forest, but i am not sure if they are there. Is Palos verdes too far of a paddle from the harbor? Any help more than welcomed. Feel free to give advice on techniques bait, tackle, lures, etc. Once again, not asking for spots (unless you feel generous) but just the right direction to start off. Tight lines, Johnny |

There is a place to put the kayak in the water next to the sport fishing pier.
See pictures by Jim. There is a very long jetty if you are looking for rock piles on both side. Live bait pen maybe open. Not much kelp paddy if I recall. Occasionally (rarely) the bubble hole in next to the pier may be working, it attracts bonito and yellowtail due to warmer water. Swimbait, squid and live bait are good choice for bass. Lures for bonito. All day parking for $2.00 with validation from the baitshop on the pier. $1.00 for 2 hours from the Polly's on the Pier restaurant. Good food, but cash only at the restaurant. They close at 2:00 PM. As to paddling to the PV, it depends on your ability and the conditions at the time. It is certainly doable. Tight lines. |

If you're only looking for rockfish, keep it simple, very simple.
Squid dropper loop 8-12 ounce sinker large or high-speed reel (will help on the retrieve) scan the edges of the canyon, you might have to put in some work but you'll find them My only other recommendation is to use whole squid

You could swim to the canyon, literally. As soon as you exit the harbor you'll see a large red buoy, the canyon starts there.
