WHAT IS IT PLEASE

So i went shore fishing mon I was tired and didn't feel like going out on the yak, went to la jolla and fished a spot for about 5 hours threw every thing but my rods in the seaweed. Used squid, and small rock or foamers started getting hits, but STILL nothing!!!!! then as I was about to leave, I thot my dad told me old timers would spit on their hooks !!! WTF???? so I threw out a squid and spit on a baby crab........ and BAM !!!!!! iI hooked up fought for a little while and it was heavy brought it to shore and my 8 pd leader broke!!!!! It was 20 inches long and I have pics. I cleaned it after slicing my finger. the fillets were nice ,,,but again had a blue tint????? can SOMEONE TELL ME what I caught?????? Thanxxxx ahead of time. HUGE SCULPIN?????? pics im still confused i sent the pics to my album

Ling cod or midshipman. (if a ling, it's undersized.)

ya you dont see em that large down here to often but that was the average size from shore when i was living in Monterey fishing Pacific Grove down to Big Sur coast. The stringer of fish in my photos is of a 20 inch Cabbie that was about 4.5lbs. I figured id throw Cabbie out there that way if i was right he was actually in the regs and not taking a short Ling. Either way, only 2 fish i know of that can be blue like that so im guessing its one or the other.

If it was multi-colored it was a gay fish

I was thinking ling. Pick up a regs booklet at any sporting good store for free. Don't get caught up in killing a fish to find out what it is. Take a pic, let it go, ID it and then you know for next time. Or kill the last living leprachaun fish on earth, whatever

Glad to hear it was a legal catch. Cabezon have to be at least 15 inches to keep. Like it has been said, get a reg book or go over it online. Especially with the rockfish as they can be difficult to differentiate between some of them. Nice fish either way.

A smart phone can also work for quick on the water lookups on regs on the DFG website. Although the book is better if you have it
