Glorious All-Reds 10/28
the vermillion rockfish were willing biters. So I've almost got these things wired and have got to perfect the style and technique before the closures on Jan 1. Experimentation. I released a number of fish including a 24" lingcod and some 2 lb reds. It was truly spectacular weather and felt empty out there - so I'll put up some visuals for those in landlocked, or colder climates. Glorious bright sunshine, 80 degrees, and not a gust of wind all morning! Almost November ...... Well, OK there is a Starry Rockfish in the mix.

DANA PT
If I launched at Dana and was forced to go fish for rockfish, I would paddle straight out two miles to 130' and look for bait balls near the bottom around this area: 33° 25.895' N 117° 41.770' W LOL - hope I'm not giving up anyone's secret spot, but there is no reason they should not be around there, feeding in the upwelling. Disclaimer: I just eyeballed that one on Google Earth in about 14 seconds, and have never fished there on a kayak. I typically target 120' into 170' deep with 4 to 8 ounces, drifting or slow trolling, depending on current. |

Nice Larry! Are you tipping your jigs with squid or just using them straight up?

Always a great post from you Larry.
I need to go down there and crowd your spots a little, its way too easy for you. Lets see how you do with a little crowd around you. Great photos. |

Blitz - There are tradeoffs both ways, the plastics/bucktails will certainly
work with no scent or bait added. I always want the 'bait profile' to be as large as possible when down "in the zone", but adding squid strips slows the sink rate. I can't even decide what my preference is here, it really depends. As I usually mention, once you get finding rockfish basics down, I think the key to good local rockfishing is not hooking/reeling/catching the little ones. Sounds simple, but its not always easy. I use bigger baits (or 2, or 3), bigger hooks (8/0, 10/0), and especially have tons of patience before setting the hook - really ignore the nibblers and tail-nippers - wait for that big headshake "thump" of a solid fish. I'm still doing a lot of experimentation and change up rigs depending on the depth and the current. Its usually a dropper loop rig with a big circle hook and 6 oz torpedo, or, a 2-6 oz bucktail or plastic. I have a video in the works but its pretty boring, so I may just skip it. |

Video Up
A couple hours on Lake Pacific, finally finished the editing on this short
rockfish video, so thought I'd post .... to go along with my other 4 kayak rockfish videos : http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y11...EPIC102812.mp4 Would you believe that circle hooks and plastics can be mixed! The lingcod splashes my not-so-waterproof old Canon camera in this one .... ! |
