Looking back at 2016...fishing wise.

This is a sort of looking back to the year 2016 so far as fishing outings goes. Not exactly chronological in terms of when the pictures were taken. Just a summery for the future remembrance of the year.


1-The year started with celebrating the New Year’s Eve at the restaurant in Baja, Mexico.



2-However as far as fishing, due to wild winds most of the week, Only three hours out of 7 days were in the kayak.



3-Huge sand storm during the first night dumped a lot of sand in my tent. I ended up sleeping very uncomfortably in my car.




Later in the year there was another trip in October.
Fishing was better, but the weather was hot.

4-This was a (6) lbs. Grouper that I caught during the October trip.



5-The Island in the distance was where the majorities of the roosterfish were hanging around and subsequently caught by others.
It was an easy entry with kayak due to lack of wind and surf.



6-It was the Turkish menu dinner night at the camp, and we were told NOT to clown around!



7-The most common fish caught here is the triggerfish.




Later in the year I accomplished a dream that had lasted for 50 some years. I went to Canada for fly fishing. It was highlight of the year.

8-The trip north started at the Los Angeles Union Station.



9-Happy angler looking forward to a great adventure on the way up north on the train.



10-One of the many rivers that the train parallels on its route.



11-I learned to tie some flies for the trip.



12-In Vancouver, I visited a suspended bridge and went down to the river.



13-So many lakes to fish in Canada, which makes it hard to decide where to go.



14-On the way up I took a short stop from driving and took a ride to the Fraser River canyon.




15-I stayed a week at a place called Rock Island Fish Camp. It was about (6) hours of drive north of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada.



16-This was my cabin for the duration. This was a fly fishing trip which I had wanted to take for about fifty years.



17-It may be due to formation of these rocky islands that the lake is called Rock Island Lake.



18-On one of many lakes that is available to the guests of the camp for fishing.



19-There is only one species of trout in the lakes called Kamloops Trout. Named after a town about (2) hours to the south.



20-Celebrating a great trip after a day of fishing.



21-This is the King Street Station of the Amtrak Rail Road in Seattle, Washington.
It was the last stop going north on the train. It was also the first place to get on the southbound train.



22-On the way back from Seattle, WA; I missed the train, so instead of staying in Roomette which I had already paid for, I had to pay again for a coach seat.
It was not as good as private room, but it was much more comfortable than the airplane seats.




Meanwhile back in California;


23-Sunrise during one of the many trips on the way to the Catalina Island.



24-One of the many bonitos that have been caught at the Cabrillo Mole (Mole for short) in city of Avalon, Catalina, California, USA, Earth.



25-To keep the sea lion from stealing fish, this set up was made.
The pulley allows easier way to bring up the heavy bucket.



26-This was the result of using a freshwater basket where sea lions live.



27-This was the basket with its fish contents before it got torn by the sea lion.



28-The Pesky pelican and cormorants trying to steal my catch.



29-This halfmoon fish was caught like many other species on frozen peas.



30-A memorial trip to celebrate the life of my late friend whom was very generous to me.
Every year around April, we would have a few days of fishing in Avalon during a yearly get-together.

32-I took a Sportfishing boat to fish the backside of Catalina.
A normally one hour trip via Catalina Express to Catalina turned in to a 3.5 hrs. ride on the sport fishing boat.



33-A great catch during the second night of the lobster season opener.



34-It was accompanied by Persian style rice which has lima beans and other ingredient in it.



35-At the Shelter Island for the Kid’s derby with the organizing staff.



36-Fishing on a Sportfishing boat.



37-Releasing the juvenile white sea bass after a few months in the grow pens in Redondo Beach Harbor.




38-The crew.



39-My first trip with my grandson to catch some trout at a kid’s pond.



40-A private boat outing resulted on many sanddab catches.



41-A whitefish caught during the same trip as above.



It was great year of fishing outings and adventures.




As one gets old one spends more time thinking about days past.

As to 2017, besides the usual Catalina Mole trips, a possible Baja trip;
I have already made all the reservations and paid and received my train ticket for another trip to Canada.
July 31st--August 16th.

Having learned my way around, I am sure it will be a much better experience than the last one. I am even planning to visit a Cabela’s store in Idaho, before crossing to Canada.

This time it will be dry fly fishing on a world Class River called Elk Valley River and its tributaries. Good chance of running into black and grizzly bears too.
