MERRY CHRISTMAS
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS Twas the night before Christmas and all through the Bay not a lobster was stirring not even a Ray. The hoopnets were stacked on the deck with care, / in hopes that a limit soon would be there. The crew were all rigging the nets with some leads / while visions of melted butter danced in their heads. The crew in their slickers and I with a smoke, / had just dropped the nets for a good long soak. When out on the water arose such a clatter / I sprang from the wheelhouse to see what was the matter. Away to the deck I flew like a flash, / pulled the rope and the float, / up in a dash. The moon on the crest of the waves did glow, / giving the look of mid-day to objects below. When to my wondering eyes should appear, / but a couple of lobsters and a six pack of beer? The rope came up so lively and quick, / I knew in a moment it must be a trick. More rapid than Eagles the lobsters they came, / as the crew whistled and howled and called them by name. More Buggies, more Spineys, more lobsters for all. To the top of the gunnels, to the top of the wall, / pull away, pull away, pull away all. So up to the wheelhouse the lobsters they flew, / with a boat full of bugs and some big crabs too. And then in a twinkling I heard and I saw, / the prancing and pawing of each lobster claw. As I drew in my hand and was turning around, / the next net had the biggest bug we had found. She was easily eight pounds from her antenna to her tail, / and her shell was as big as a five gallon pail. The crew spoke not a word but went straight to work, / and filled all the buckets then turned with a jerk. And giving a nod, back to the slip we floated, / the boat as full as it could be loaded. The crew shouted, we have what we need, / it’s time for us all, to do a good deed. We released the eight pounder, / sent her right back where we’d found her, But I heard her exclaim as she dove out of sight… “MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!! Damn!! I remember back in the day when I slipped at Redondo: I heard about this crazy guy who caught a white seabass on the edge of the canyon fishing a kayak. I'd only seen one kayak ever on the water and the next trip out on my skiff I saw some dude fishing the same area and went over to say hello.
People can talk all kinds of shit: who did what and when but I'll never forget that day and all the years we've known each other since then. Jim you're the consummate professional and I love you like a brother. Merry Christmas and a lot of big bugs not to mention dinner plates sized crabs to you my old friend. |
