WEIRD!!!
I started my day off with epic conditions calm seas and clear, blue skies. I knew I would be making the move to search for surface iron fish so I cruised along, filling the tank with bait along the way and the first mass of birds knocks on my front door. I lazily wandered to it, but after a third time I booked it over to the area. This was my downfall. I pedal pretty hard, so hard in fact that I snapped the pedal shaft at the adjustment pin on the Mirage Drive. So you know what that means. Oh ya, PADDLING! I get to the area and find a huge pile of yellows free-swimming and get an instant hookup on one, but guess what? Yep, forgot about the camera, again. I told myself after this fish, “Ok, first thing when you find a school turn on the camera.” I kept moving along when I stumbled across this diamond in the rough. I thankfully remembered to turn the camera on even after I made 2 casts, but hey at least I captured the moment. Spoiler Alert: Well, there was a nice school of tails probably 200 strong moving along with a shark. I am not sure what kind of shark, but THE DARKHORSE made the best guess, a seven gill. There was no long tail like a thresher, but it had a tan color possibly even a soup fin. Be sure to look very carefully when the video goes into slow-motion and you will see it. I still can’t believe what I was seeing and to get a hook up off the back of it was an image burned into my memory banks. As I said before my goal is to get the strike on video, and this is what I have vowed to produce. I want to hear what you guys think these fish were doing. So far the two theories are: The Kid- They were using the shark skin to rub on and removing parasites or scratching an itch. THE DARKHORSE- The fish were bullying the shark and abusing it forcing it to regurgitate and eating the shark’s meal. Whatever it was it was WEIRD! That’s the only word I can come up with. Enjoy! I've seen that behavior once before off the Pacific coast of Baja. About 7 yellows rubbing on a 5 foot mako that seemed to be just sitting there. It always stuck in my head because I'd never seen or heard of that before.
A few months ago I got Milton Love's new book "Certainly More Than You Wanted to Know About Fishes of the Pacific Coast". On the section about yellowtail it mentions that exact same behavior and suggests they do that to dislodge parasites. Killer video btw!

Very nice video with the slow mo and all.
You need a cigar and a glass of scotch in your hand when you tell that story. Seriously, that will be your calling card. |

Amazing Kevin! You weren't lying when you said you caught it on camera.
I'm even more amazed by the fact that you can locate those damn fish with so much ease, break your mirage drive, not miss a beat, paddle while throwing that 10' stick with pinpoint accuracy, have countless hookups and catch all that crazy sh*t on camera. INSPIRING TO WATCH!!!!! |

Pretty cool!
We saw that same thing in San Quintin a couple of years ago. This was about same time of year. I wonder if this happens year around or just in the fall? |
