What Launches Are Open - Post It Here!

Maybe there is a better way to do this but, we should be able to keep an active list of whats open and where kayak-ers can go to launch.
(copy and past the info below to your post reply and change the appropriate data)

Date - 3/29 Location - Newport Harbor - Coast Guard Station Beach Launch Open - Yes. Parking lot open - Closed. Park on street. Other Notes - Lots of boats on the water. A few other kayak-ers out. No hassles from the authorities (as it should be, exercise and getting food (fishing) are allowable necessary activities per state guidelines.)

Lets work together and keep informed. Whats better in a situation like this than getting out, getting exercise, reducing stress and practicing 'Social Distancing' which is what kayaking is all about!

agree with others on this topic, don't abuse the privilege to where the right is taken away. just be respectful of others, keep your distance, pick up after yourself, bring hand sanitizer for when pumping gas, handling $$ etc & things should be copasetic.. Most of us don't understand why the launches are closed yet they allow us to cram the supermarkets like sardines hunting for TP yada yada please just don't blow up the spot so we have no where to launch at all

State beaches are closed

According to this email I got from Surfline. I receive emails as a premium member. According to it, a surfer was ticketed 1000$ for disobeying order. I subscribe so I can get the long range forecasts to do some planning. Some of this information might be readily available to non subscribers through the website?

Here's the story about the surfer in Manhattan Beach:

Here's another about a paddleboarder in Malibu:

Wow, this is a serious bummer. I figure a matter of time when having a kayak on a vehicle will get you cited well before you get to the off ramp.

I feel manipulated and violated with all this.

I think the reason behind these citations is because they are launching from LA County beaches which are officially closed. In that case they leave themselves open to citation.

The 'Stay at home' mandate allows for exercise as long as you are not in a group so kayaking or paddle boarding is not an issue in its self.

I have been launching out of Newport Harbor which has no restrictions. I have paddled past the Sheriff and Coastguard many times and have seen many, many others do the same and we just get a friendly wave from the officers.

Anyone know if Dana Point (baby beach or regular launch or Doheny) is open for launching?

I'm pretty sure both of those cases are 1) in very populous areas and 2) pretty egregious offenses where the person in question pushed the limits of the person in authority could/should do.

If I'm a lifeguard and I'm just doing my job, and someone tells me "F you, what are you going to do about it?", I'm pretty sure my response is to do everything I can. That guy bought himself a ticket.

That Malibu pier case, dude was at the *pier*, one of the more public spots in Malibu. They asked him to get out of the water and he hung out until the cops launched a boat and drove all the way up MDR.

I'm pretty sure the cops don't like it when you make them chase you.

I think it's gonna get harder to get out sooner than later.

I saw a spearo posting from Ventura county where he was just having a cup of coffee in his truck and the cops rolled him off and threatened a ticket.

As much as I'd like nothing more than to get out with each passingday, I've pretty much thrown in the towel on it since it's so much work to prep my gear and drive an hour only to find out there's nowhere to launch. :/

This is how i understood it as well. The violator had been asked multiple times by the life guards to leave per the article, and then the lifeguards flagged down the SOs to remove him.

As of yesterday Davies boat ramp and South Shore boat ramps in long beach are open.

The city's website has a list of boat ramps and whether or not they are open.

Cabrillo beach and boat ramp are closed
Kings harbor is closed
