Bill Poole Memorial Contest Hubbs-Seaworld Benefit

For the Bill Poole Memorial contest on Sat July 10th I launched from the Shores at 3am and found a light boat with plenty of squid coming up to their very bright underwater lights. I caught 50 or so squid and headed over to the fishing ground closer to the kelp with 50 other yaks and boats already in place. I was lucky to get one hit on an iron with squid at apx. 6am from the below pictured 32 pound Yellowtail. The real challenge was to keep the fish away from all the anchor lines in the area.

The tournament banquet at Hubbs-SeaWorld was great with some very nice silent auction and raffle items along with incredible bbqed white sturgeon from another aquiculture operation in Sacramento. With over 200 entrants in three catagories, private boats, party boats and kayaks my Yellowtail won the kayak division but I also would have had the highest total weight if Threshers were included in this fun contest. Next year I hope we will see more kayakers participate in this event that raised over $50k to directly benefit the White Sea Bass replensihment program that Hubbs has running for over 20 years with over 1.6 million WSB released into SoCal waters so far.

On July 2nd I benefited from Hubbs longtime efforts by landing a 46 lb. WSB with squid pinned to an iron. I was happy to submit my 6th WSB head of this year to Hubbs the following Saturday. A sign at Hubbs-SeaWorld suggests dropping off WBS heads at Dana Tackle shop after hours but I just drive around the back of the facility and have always from an eager scientist to take a head of my hands.
