First trip to Leff! 8/15/2020, also posted a new video

Leffingwell Landing Saturday the 15th.
Went up to camp with a new group of divers, and we had a fleet of scuppers.
I threw a lightweight 7' rod in the hull just in case, and glad I did.

Diving 15-20m, I didn't do too well polespearing holes for lings, but *man* are there some blue rockfish just everywhere. Dumb critters too.
If I waited too long at the surface breathing up for my next dive, 3 or 4 would be pecking at my spearhead by the time I went to dive.

I got one nice little greenling on a dive, and halfway through the day hung up my weight belt and tied on my deadliest lure: the 3.5 oz flat fall knock off

Couldn't get it to the bottom without getting hit by blue rockfish.
Made ceviche for the whole camp. was a wonderful trip.
I packed it in the next day, but the whole group hit up Pico Creek.
I was a bit stunned by how well they did on lings and other cod. Limits for 4 on the spear.

Conditions were perfect. Water was warm and glassy.
Barely any current all day to speak of. The locals we dove with were kind of beside themselves about it.

Got home just in time to take off on a spearfishing charter to Santa Cruz Island. Took my first shot on a Yellowtail and blew it. Broke about every rule I could.
They're quite a sight to see when schooling in the water and I was stoked just to see one for the first time swimming.

One of our divers took a 28lb WSB out in open water from a school of over 100 as he tells it. We shot a bunch of opaleye and Sheephead.

I also just published this if anyone is interested.

Isn't exactly kayak fishing, but holds true for my experience of "buck fever" as it relates to chasing yellowtail and WSB.
I've had my line explode more times than I can count at this point in my 3 years on a kayak, but still haven't managed to keep one hooked....
Part of me thinks I blew all of my luck on that 42" halibut in my profile pic

I was initially apprehensive to share here given that it strays from kayak fishing a bit, especially since this community has been overwhelmingly welcoming and supportive of my work.
I also figured that for reason enough that you'd enjoy it since we're all people of the sea here.
I'd dare say there's nothing I love more than that moment when I step off shore.
That hallowed feeling at the start of a trip where anything's possible and your mind is buzzing.

Spent 5 out of the last 7 days in the water this week, exhausted and full of gratification and gratitude.
Met over a dozen new friends out there, and couldn't ask for more.
Of course, now I have to take at least a few days to make sure the wife feels the same

Everyone must be off shore fishing?

Surprised nobody has posted up yet.
Well, let me be the first.
Well Done on the report and video too.
Hope to see plenty more in future
Better yet, go fishing together again sometime in the future.

Wow. I am gonna need to check out your other videos too. This is your second film (documentary?) I have watched and I am super impressed. Totally agree with that buzz we all feel when launching in the morning full of expectations and thinking that this might be THAT day!

Another super video. I particularly relate to, "....keep showing up while the law of averages plays itself out."

I love seeing your posts here, and your videos are epic, just subscribed!

I am signed up for my freediving L1 class in mid-September, and am already in the process of rigging my Fish N' Dive for spearing around SD. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks Y'all! Much appreciated

@KayakNinja Congrats on taking the plunge! I'm jealous... I know a number of SD based divers who pull YT from the shore regularly. Hard to beat that. Be forewarned though... Every hot day I'm out on a Kayak fishing, I'm mostly just wishing I was *in* the water

Amen

Creatively awesome video hits home for kayak fishing. Always ruminating about next time. Thanks.
