KFACA / PSO Benefit tourney - $$$ for MLPA fight
This is a planning discussion, so please jump in with ideas. Two deals - biggest single fish for the trophy team, and heaviest 3 calicos for the bass crew. Fish to be weighed on the water on the support / photo boat. Beer, sodas, maybe a bbq. How about we invite the spearos too? June 27 has a nice rising tide and no tournament conflicts as far as I can see. Did I miss something? Competition and prizes are nice, but the point here is to raise dough to protect La Jolla and our other fisheries. I'm thinking $50 entry, with merchandise prizes for the winners or a modest cash payback. The money will go straight into the MLPA lobbying effort via the KFACA's allies at the Partnership for Sustainable Oceans. If you've been encouraged by recent positive headlines, this is how they happen. Sound off if you're game. Don't make me post the closure maps to you remind you what's at stake. And while we're at it, is there any interest in an informal MLPA informational workshop? Brent has offered to host at one of the OEX shops in the past. Come on with the feedback! Every part of this idea is up for discussion. Paul Last edited by PAL; 04-16-2009 at 05:47 PM. |

Great idea, Paul!
I'm sure I'm not alone when I say maybe a tournament sooner than that and Possibly more than one. Since I've never organized a tournament I can only imagine the work involved. Then the idea of trying to concentrate as many anglers as possible at that one tournament comes to mind, but I'd be willing to set a few dates aside. Thanks again for all the hard work you do, just thinking out loud, either way I'm in.

I'll donate, again. Even if I don't actually fish the tournament.

I am in and like the format bass and biggest fish, maybe you could add a spearo division or add them to biggest fish. I think it would be a good thing to offer an info night in SD and if it works we could have one in OC after that.

That's an encourging start. Do you prefer merchandise prizes, or a percentage payback (maybe 20%?) to the winners? Big fish and bass would be separate contests. And I would like to invite the free divers - we're working closely with them. Any issues?

I like the idea of a workshop...and the tourney sounds like a great way to donate some cash to the cause. I want in.

No teams - every man for himself. That's the kayak fishing way! ;-)
I want to ask straight out - would more people sign up for $40? But on the other hand, this is really about keeping what's ours. Can you find $50 for that? |

I'm in... I could be interested as a spearo. Maybe no seperate divisions, mano a mano.... could be a fun challenge between speardivers, kayakers.
I think keep it simple, just a payout, unless manufacturers are coming fwd. to donate stuff. That would be nice, but don't want you to have to have to work hard to get stuff. let me know how I can help. chris Edit: I am fine with $50. But just a thought, I am thinking maybe less entry fee to encourage more participants. No payout, this is for our fishing rights, I don't care for money payout. I don't necessarily need it. How about a nice Trophy, "King of La Jolla 2009" |

Food can be kept simple to keep expenses down, hot dogs, or burgers, chips, soda... COSTCO I really think the most money that can go to the cause as possible, is important.
Nothing worse than fishing in a tourney to the last possible minute, then coming in to NO food left & starving... just saying... |

Keep the ideas coming! Lots of good stuff.
How about we set the entry at $35 or $40, with trophies and / or merchandise prizes and all the funds dedicated to fighting the MLPA? But don't expect me to round up too much, in this economy the freebies are hard to come by. I'm sure I can come up with a 'yak, maybe two. |

Benefit Tourney
Is a potluck a bad idea if there's lot's of people? We can bring food to share so no money goes to food and more goes to the cause. And I'm sure everybody has stuff to donate for a raffle or prizes. Old/extra fishing gear, whatever. Maybe silent auction some donated stuff. All proceeds go to the cause! All I'm saying is, The stuff is fun, but even that costs money. I want all my money going to fight the good fight, not kayak butt pads or bags of old Gulp.

I think a potluck is a good idea to save costs. I know the spearos have had auctions for their used gear to go towards MLPA funds. It isn't about getting what you would selling privately, just getting some $ for the cause, but a bidding war can happen too. And someone walking away with a great deal on gear.
Does anyone have problems with having spear divers (kayak or shore divers only) enter? I'd like to see a mano a mano comp, between groups, and also comraderie at the end of the day. We all need to stick together in this fight! chris |
