DP 1/23

Launched from the boat ramp with my son at 5:45 in a dense fog and headed to a waypoint near the whistler buoy out on the point. I got a little lost in the fog after I rounded the jetty and it took me a few minutes to believe the direction that my gps was telling me to go to reach my waypoint. It is amazing how the fog can mess with your brain. Even trying to paddle in a straight line was a chore. I'd take 20 strokes and look down at my steer arrow and find that I was 30 t0 45 degrees from the proper heading.

On the way out I realized that I had forgotten my gaff, game clip and rod holders so the odds of hooking a nice fish were greatly increased. Got to the area and was able to make a nice bunch of candy bar sized macks and started some dropper loop drifts. Had lots of action on nice chunky sand bass some lings and one nice halibut.

the fog burned off by 8:00 and the water totally glassed off and it turned into a beautiful day out there.

Final count:

6 Chunky sand bass, all but 1 on bait and all released
3 lings, all on bait and all over the limit and keepable in March.
1 edible halibut on bait and kept.

That but looks thick! Impressive without a gaff or game clip as well.

Lipping them is too hard on the thumb. If you let them chomp down on your whole fist, they hang on long enough to get them over the side and into the rod pod. I thought he was going to punch his way out the bottom of the yak after I got him in there. You cant kill them. The kerfuffle in my rod pod went on for an hour and a half

Yea, I'll have to make a point of forgetting my gaft and game clip. Looks like it works wonders.
