I was there for 2 hours, and my 9 month old daughter could not take anymore, waiting to speak. But I did fill out an "oppose" form, and turn in my statement. They started calling fisherment an hour after I left. Good to see fellow fishermen there!
Council member Carl DeMaio stated that he had to leave early, but is "Standing with the fishermen on this issue" PLEASE SEND HIM A THANK YOU email, and to support WG 2. Watch it live CityTV | City of San Diego (http://www.sandiego.gov/citytv/)

Marti Emerald to Coast Keeper, "you failed in your presentation, you used Teddy Roosevelt in your presentation, he was a sportsman, hunter, and fisherman. I cannot support your proposal."
Lightner capitulates with Emerald, and is concerned about the "no take, and contraints in the reserve." PLEASE EMAIL Thank these people, & give your support to 2!
Dont forget DeMaio "with the fishermen on this one."
Donna Frye: On the fence, "no motion, no action."

Carl DeMaio left early with the statement the San Diego City Council should side with the fishermen and support closures that are in the fisherman's best interest. He went on to say we have already lost too many jobs and too many industries and we should not lose our legacy.
Marti Emerald also lectured the coastkeepers about trying to sidestep the process at the last minute with basically BS data (she used a some bigger words ) She also rebutted their National Park argument by saying they are all set up for the people to use, enjoy and maintain. They also all seemed to express not being happy hearing about these closures so late in the game. Everyone who spoke did an excellent job. I'm home having a beer to celebrate this small victory in the large scale of things. I think Donna Frye did an excellent job running the meeting as well. |

Billy closed the deal after Tommy Gomes and John from Oceanside spoke for us. Marti Emerald mentioned that Coastkeeper tried to push something through that wasn't well documented but that she had printed materials with data from reputable sources from Billy. My representative Sherri Lightner said "ditto to that". I didn't get to speak but I was definitely OK with how Donna Frye managed the meeting.

Also wanted to say thanks to D-Gax for throwing his minute to Tommy Gomez when Tommy ran out of time, Tommy made very good use of that minute.

This thing might have back fired because the City is paying closer attention to the negative economic impact versus hypothetical conservation gains. Great job everyone! Billy, you nailed it!

Way to go guys, esp you da man Billy V....
Wish I too could have made it, slammed at work today, I will be watching it later...figure I will be in the office all night. Thanks to all those who attended, even Chris and his baby girl toughing it out. Thank you to the Council Members who realize the impact this would've had on our economy. And shame on you Coastkeepers...your tactic was called a bait and switch. We fishermen know it all too well and you got called on it. Again to those that spoke.... We all owe ya a cold one...

My biggest fear was that I would not get a chance to speak, so I pushed to the front and begged for 3 minutes. Siting the ceded time from David Johnson a La Jolla Swimmer, Mr. Chris Fierro who had to cut short the meeting because of his beautiful baby daughter, and my friend Don.
I was not going to be shut down, or cast aside. In those 3 minutes I took the opportunity to slam The Coast Keeper Proposal for the misleading, greasy fastball they tried to throw past our city council members, and the residents of San Diego. They should be ashamed of themselves, and are now exposed for the rogue environmental group that they are. -That presentation, and the materials presented were a collaboration of our core members efforts, including our brothers from the North. It was also personal. The RSG member Garth Murphy who spoke today on behalf of Coast Keeper took the opportunity to back stab several of us kayak fisherman after all but guaranteeing our right to fish North of Scripps Pier. He lied to our faces with the 11th hour submission of a reserve north of Scripps Pier and submission of the Dip Net Clause. This was pay back. ------------------------------ Its a little draining for me, as my emotions, and passion for our sport was doing the talking up there. Billy V, I want my commission for the speech you gave . Nice work. Way to close out the deal.
Marti Emerald, Carl DeMaio, Sherri Lightner seemed very sympathetic. "There is no motion, there is no action out of this committee, the meeting is adjourned."

Your words were there to seal that deal, Grego's documentary evidence, and my pent up fury for the injustice we are all being subject to. -There's (1) more game left, The Super Bowl on Oct. 21st. |

All involved excellent collaboration... Billy, excellent job presenting! Major props!
Let this be a lesson to all the kayakers looking at this thread, we need overwhelming presence on 10-21 in Long Beach, there are many who have sacrificed vacation, or sick leave, time away from family. If you have been on the fence, now is the time to make a commitment to attend the LAST MLPA meeting! Post up! http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/s...5589#post45589 |

Amen,
I'm relived. As a single dad with a daughter, I had a tough time making last minute decisions. But when I didn't hear from habenaro, I actually felt like things were working in a positive direction. Emails with thanks are now being made to the two council members noted. Ed |

I was very happy with the outcome, I disagree with Coastkeeper on this issue, but I do not consider them the "enemy". As a surfer I've been soaking in our coastal waters for the last 30 years, without Coastkeeper and Surfrider our waters would be much more polluted than they already are. I also disagree with Surfrider positions occasionally but I remain a member because of the good things they do upstream to keep the pollution out of our coastal waters. Hope to see _everyone_ on the 21st in Long Beach. |
