LJ Tourney
Those are some pretty funny pictures of less than smooth landings! Since so many are good sports, I'll tell you how my day went. First, I fished for bass and caught only one calico. About 16 inches. I caught 1 rockfish and also my first legal ling cod. But he was exactly 24", so I turned him loose. Now for my smooth landing: I could see that the surf was bigger than usual, so I stowed my gear and waited for some of the bigger swells to pass. I decided it was best to make a mad dash with my pedals and get out in shallow water but still deep enough so my flippers don't bottom out. No problem, I've done this many times. So I get through the zone OK and think I am in the right depth because people all around me are standing knee to thigh deep. So I jump out... right into a depression and I'm up to my neck in water. Oh, did I mention that I was wearing waders? (Yeah, I know, only geeks wear waders... thanks Moyer!) So, now I'm in water up to my neck wearing waders that come up to my chest. At least I didn't roll! Anyway, I feel fine. The water feels refreshing and I work my way in to shallow water and grab my bow and start to pull into shore. But the shallower I get, the harder it is to walk! Eventually, I couldn't lift my legs any more. I felt like I had a 50 lb. yellowtail in each leg! Eventually, I had to sit in the shallow water and pull my waders off. It was pretty embarrassing, but I don't think anybody took pictures anyway. So that was my day. I couldn't stay for the after-party, but I had a great time on the water. Thanks to all the organizers for a great event.

Classic, but in all seriousness, you should never have to jump off the kayak like that. I saw a few people using this method on tournament day.
Learn how to control your kayak in the surf zone and this will never be an issue. Take a class from me or take a class from someone else, but please take a class and learn the proper techniques, you will be much better off in the long run. If nothing else get some instruction off the internet and go out there with no gear and practice.

The hands down best technique to surf land a Hobie is to steer it in with the rudder down, and drive unit locked securely in the drive well to power close to the shore.
--You use the bungie cord and hook to hold the peddles apart when you see the shallow water under the kayak. Then step off and grab the stern. Morgan at Blue Water Tackle is a Pro at this, and I have used this same technique since 06. When I deviate from the above technique its a 50% chance I will get wet using the soft Hobie Paddle. -------------------------- Regardless of how I choose to land, I always stow everything. Those pix are awesome, hope Landwhale's hand is okay...that looks nasty! Looking at the pictures you would think it was 5 feet surf out there......but it wasn't. How many broken rods were there?

We had a special prize for best wipeout. Although there was many contenders, top honors went to Mr. Green. Blood and impalement always wins out.

Gumby legs
Oh noooooo! The camera sees all! That's OK. Usually, I break down my gear and PADDLE in. I was just lazy and went for the peddle in. I THOUGHT I was in two feet of water! It seems like every person you ask has a different method. I've tried em all.
