From pages 24 and 25 of the CA ABC's of Boating...
"Navigation Lights: All vessels are required to display navigation lights between sunset and sunrise and during times of restricted visibility. In inland and international waters, sailing vessels under sail alone shall exhibit navigation lights shown on page 40. The tricolored lantern and the all-round green and red lights should never be used together. A sailing vessel of less than 23 feet (7 meters) in length shall, if practicable, exhibit those lights prescribed or have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in suf cient time to prevent collision. A vessel under oars may display those lights prescribed for sailing vessels or have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light, which shall be exhibited in sufcient time to prevent collision."

I'm willing to bet that they didn't stop you because of the regulations, it had more to do with the fact that they know what happens every year at the start of lobster season. It's kind of like those DUI checkpoints that they put up after every Superbowl, they know people will be drinking and driving so what better way to prevent DUI accidents than to stop them in their tracks Be safe out there, don't become a statistic.

With all of the boat traffic that we've had lately I'm surprised we haven't had more incidents.

One guy, with an inflatable, had a visit from DFW this morning at Redondo hand launch. He only had 20 lobsters to his credit. Oh yeah, they were all shorts!!! Can't believe they let him leave with his boat.

Recalculation:
I have this simple calculation off hand. Pull net every 15 min..>>4/hr. X 6 hours=24 pulls, pull net every 20 min...>3/hr. X 5 hours=15 pulls, 39 pulls X 2 nets=78 pulls, Average 4 lobsters per net=312 Some pulls had 6 bugs, and a few none. Maybe close to 280 shorts would be a better figure. WOW. |
