Adding rod holders to a Hobie Revo
My question is what maker of rod holders (Scotty or RAM) are most suitable to be installed in the front half of the kayak versus the rod holders already molded in behind the seat? I would like to do this as it helps me watch the rods while paddling or trolling, without having to listen for the clicker or look over my shoulder. I am looking at the ones that you can rotate. Thanks in advance for any information. Kevin |

One possibility if you dont have your fishfinder mounted there already and you dont want to cut new holes in your kayak or you dont want anything on the rails is the Ram Wedge Mount in the mast hole. You would have to scoot forward to grab the rod however.....
http://www.kayakfishingsupplies.com/...Mount-1/Detail If you have a big enough mounting plate on there you could probably mount whatever you want....fishfinder,rodholder,boombox.....I believe the newer Revo's have the reinforced mast hole tubes. Or better yet call the guys at OEX Oceanside (Hobie dealers) Last edited by tony; 01-13-2010 at 07:54 PM. |

Be advised
If you have a newer Revo with the new style rudder deployment system, the UP and DOWN pull handles you will need to be careful what you mount on the gunnels. The up down cords are run along that route, and if you drill without looking you can cut it easily. Probably not a good idea to have very long screws or bolts protruding through the area either as it will chaff the cord. -2009 and newer It can be done, just drill cautiously. |

Revo Rod Holder Position
I have two ram ball mounts mounted on the side gunnels about even with the drive. I can troll with the rods parrallel to the water but once I put an angle on them they place the rod ends into the path of your legs and feet. I'm curious to what others are doing?

I resisted installing a Ram rod holder in the most common place on the rails forward of the gear pouches on my Revo. My concern was not that the rod holders would get in the way of peddling, (they do not). My main concern was that having the ball on the rail would make it more difficult for me to transport and store my kayak upside down on the door rails in my garage.
As an alternative, I came up with a removable rod holder that installs in the Hobie cup holder. This thing works great but I do find that my knees sometimes hit the device when peddling and if I need to hang my legs over the sides to slide up to the bow I have to remove this rod holder. For daily use the permanently mounted rocket launchers are probably a better way to go but this removable rod holder works great as well. If you want to know more about this device, take a look at this thread from a couple of years ago. http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/s...hlight=dsafety Bob Last edited by dsafety; 01-14-2010 at 01:54 PM. |

Everyone:
Thanks for the feedback. I bought my kayak from OEX Oceanside, so I will give Nate and Drew a call. Dsafety (BoB) - I really like what you did. I will not have the issue you have regarding transporting and storing the kayak, but the ability to have something removable, without drilling or mounting something permanently, looks good for right now. Thanks for the link Kevin |
