general question

I don't spend as much time fishing salt water as I would like to but I was wondering today. With all the live bait fishing we do has anyone ever heard of someone hooking a porpoise? I don't mean landing one, I think that would get you condemned pretty quickly. I mean hooking one and either cutting your line or just losing it. Maybe it happens all the time and I've just never heard of it. This is just a curious question, nothing to judge anybody about.

I hooked a baby dolphin once on a mondo mack. Found out quickly how fast I need to go to get up on a plane. They're usually smart enough to know not to bite the bait with a hook in it but this one was the runt of the pod.

I have seen it happen on Albacore trips when they were hungry. Usually, they are too smart to make that mistake.

I've hooked two porpoises from the kayak, not for long to be sure. You aren't stopping those guys, and their friends follow along as well.

I’ve never seen it happen. It’s also weird, I’ve never seen porpoise on my fish finders.

Never hooked one, when surf fishing a gull took my rig with multiple baits and then another gull decided to get in on it and I had 2 of them hooked. Eventually I got close enough to free one but the other one swallow the hook I cut the line and it flew off.

I have only every heard of it happening and what I have heard lines up with what is mentioned above: might has well have a truck on the other end of that line.
