10/26 Surprise

Launched Sunday morning into some heavy surf and light fog. Water was
64.5 and clear/purple outside.

On my way out, I saw some bait on my meter along the kelp in 85 ', so I
grabbed the bass rod and threw a green plastic* - third cast, and
Wham-HOOKUP !

Drag peeling, I figured this was gonna be one helluva momma Calico.

Cute little RAT! Quite a tussle in and out of the kelp on the Calcutta 250 &
straight 30# spectra. Yes the sashimi is good, and the bugs will be
feeding on the recycled head this week in my hoop net.

Finished up with a handful of Reds from MPA-land. Vermillion carcass's
recycles nicely into bug bait too.

One more cast, you're never sure what's next!

P.S. *these guys are back in biz now ... http://www.floridaysfishing.com/5swimmintails.html

Very nice on the 250! Most have smoked the drag a little. I believe this is your second YT on a plastic? Something I want to achieve.

JD, probably 8 pounds or so.

Afran, thanks for pointing that out, I've caught two yellowtail in 2008 on
plastic. I don't put much time into chasing yellows, or mackerel for bait
anymore, and may have spent a total of 10 minutes fishing for calicos this
year, and that's almost all I used to do. Strange how target species
rotate. Keeps it interesting.

My FIRST kayak yellowtail was caught in the Moyer Tourney 2003, on the
same plastic and the same bass setup. Note the green plastic on the bass
rod below, that's what I throw a lot, and fooled this fish too.

(2003 Steve Moyer Tournament, 8th place, 14 lbs)

Couple yellow shots from June 2006, yellowtail released

Ooops.....time for service on the 250.

It looks like tempting murphy's law worked, again. After having my heart broken a few times in the kelp with the bass rod, I swore to never throw one in La Jolla again. I lost two big Yellowtails on the bass rod fishing the beach last summer, damn sabiki hook ups .
