It floats, and works well. I think I paid just over $100 for it a year ago. A lot of folks here praise West Marine for their warranty and they have good sales, so whichever kind you get, look there.

Do you want a little radio to chit-chat with your friends and heckle boaters? Or do you want a high powered piece of navigational/safety equipment which will save your ass in an emergency?

I went for the latter... Standard Horizon HX-870. High transmitting power, integrated GPS, and DSC distress function. Not cheap, but how much is your life really worth to you? You don't need it until you need it, then you REALLY need it. $0.02

Which ever one you get, make sure it is waterproof and floats. Should be able to get a decent one for around a hundred bucks or so.

I used to have a Cobra one and it worked perfect. But it got stolen along with all my fishing stuff.

I then upgraded to the HX870 specifically because it has the DSC function that transmits your location. Hopefully I never need to use that feature but I have peace of mind knowing that it is there, specially because I go out alone most of the time.

Another HX870 user here too. Like everyone else, DSC function fplayed a big factor when shopping around. Question for you other users: do you attach it to your vest? It is a larger size unit.

I have a Cobra HH550 and it's a nice radio, but a little quiet when out on the water. I really wish it were louder.

Yes. Its a burden but you need to have it with you incase you cant get to your yak...or it sinks.
