Avet uses a standard formula to come up with its ratings, (Based on "1/3" of line class @ strike) How did they figure 9 x 3 = 25 for the SX, but 9 x 3 = 30 for the MX? It appears that they under-rated the SX by 2# and over-rated the MX by 3#. I don't know, but by formula they are the same class of reel. So it all came down to capacity. I didn't need more than 400yds of 50# braid for kayak use, so SX was the one.

Those rating are based on the capacity of the reel, not the drag. The SX/MX get the same drag. Personally, I like the MXJ better than the SX. Its a little narrower than the SX and bigger around. Perfect form factor for me!

On lever action reels, the drag ability is usually in proportion to the diameter of the spool, as pressure is put directly on the spool, and not on the drive train

I'm using an SXmc and a MXJmc and absolutely love them both. Smooth drags. I would spend the little bit extra and get the MC versions as you will always find a time to toss lures. Quality reels. Calicos, WSB and YT catchers.
