stupid new guy question about FFs - Kayak Fishing Adventures on Big Water’s Edge

Dont make fun of me too much, I have fished from land my entire life and am just getting into this sport.

That being said what is the average depth i should be looking for when buying a fish finder?

While on the topic what other things should I look for when buying a fishfinder? Ive looked into the lowarance elite 4 and the humminbird 385 ci di, both seem like decent units but id hate to buy something now and realize it was completley the wrong one...

any advice helps

All decent finders will work at the depths we are allowed to fish. You can't fish any deeper than 300' by law.

Mr Patrick, I think the 50 fathom rule only applies to groundfish, correct me if I'm wrong.
