Big Bay 3/6/11

Hit up the Big bay with some other Kayakers from San Diego and other locations, there was about 6 of us total. Paddled to the barge and picked up some bait. Choice of Chovies or Dines, I took the Chovies. Headed over to a spot that I thought was holding Halibut instead it was holding a lot of these

and these

It was a fun day on the bay, too bad the weather wasn't better, but the company, and the fishing was fun.

Total fish count for the day:
3 Sculpin (2 kept, 1 released)
3 Octos
1 short Halibut
1 mac

Once I saw that the sculpin were on the chew I thought, O.K. a few of these guys will make for a nice dinner. These were some of the nicer sculpins I have caught in a while. I picked up a smaller one near Shelter Island, but as I was going to grip it he popped off. Oh well, it was a fun day.

I saw a bunch of you guys out there, was wondering if there was a MBF or something...I was able to scratch out a few quality Sandies, the bite was good early. I also caught an octopus long-lining the channel, in all my years fishing the big bay I have never caught one.

Thanks for the report, sculpin makes great tacos!

Good Luck,
Big J

p.s. hope you guys made it back to the launch before that north wind started blowing.

Those were my first Octopies.

To answer your question about the Wind, NO, Myself and Jhook started back right as it started, mixed with the outgoing tide, and boat wakes, it was a terrible paddle back. I felt like I was in a washing machine. Great workout though.

Likewise man, it was great seeing everyone. Did you guys go on the other side of the jetty? If so how did that work out?

No we got up there and scouted around for an opening and with the wind
and tide we started to get ansy, thought better of it and headed back, but that spot is the next target on the next trip there.
Yeah the paddle back was tough I am sure, I know I can feel it today

Maybe I should have said something - but I didn't think I should try telling six guys that I just met what to do and where to fish!

It occurred to me once I saw the power of the incoming tide that we were going to paddle against the flow, to fish the jetty and then battle the swing coming back. Just after we launched, my first cast got me a decent sandie and I had already drifted about 100 yards from the wolf pack by the time it was released. I had a cheap radio with me but I didn't hear any chatter or know what channel to try for Mountain Biker. Since I had to be off the water by 11am I figured I would ride the tide.

Great fun though!

Yeah, I'm feeling it today. What was with all the octopussies? I caught two.
OK Mtnbykr, next time I'll save them for you. Maybe you can show us how to clean them.

someone picked, and we had to switch to 70...sorry about that, nice seein ya, we WILL do it again soon....b

No wonder we didn't hear you guys anymore, we were on 72 and then I thought you said go to 71 when the race chatter started. Next time we'll get the radios coordinated before we push off. For a while there I didn't know what channel you were on either.

Hey OneTrip, you were the smartest one out of all of us. Originally I was going to get bait and work my way back from the barge to S.I. I altered my plan and when further out.

We were on 71. Apparently 70 is reserved for Digital Selective Calling:

A few more pics ( Jimmy, I hope you don't mind. I didn't think they warranted a separate thread).

That's a cool pic of Regor.
If it was me I'd print it out.
