Iron set up Help

What model Newell is good for iron/yoyo in La Jolla area? I'm mainly targeting YT and WSB. What pound test? Mono or braid?

Personally I'd say skip the Newell for a yoyo rig and get a daiwa sealine or saltist, Id reccomend the 40 size with 40 lb cxx p line it can rub lobster lines and can withstand tangles like you wouldn't believe! Throw a 6x or 7x jr or a tady 4/0 in blue and white and your ready to go!!!!!

I'll second Matt and and not recomend the Newells. There are better yo-yo reels out there like the ones he mentioned. That said I'll be using my Newell 533 with the 4.6 retrieve because that's what I have and my old Penn YTS 4/0 convertion is out of action. If you already have a Newell in their 300, 400, or 500 series they will work with 40lb but if you're planning on buying some thing new than try the Daiwa SL 40. Mike

Newell 338 would be my choice. Its what I use on all my surface jig sticks.

My yoyo stick has an Avet LX though.

As for line, Izorline First string or XXX in 40 or 50lb. You want the stretch mono gives when fishing the iron because the hook is not "set" Just wind through the strike. You can pretty much button your drag down too, Mine is usually hammered down, your not going to break 40 or 50lb on a kayak.
