Coming to San Diego, hope to fish
I have never fished La Jolla, so that sounds like an exciting one. I'll bring my Kayak down. Honestly, don't know how the hotel is going to feel about it though. Or I guess I could get a rental from someplace. In case you guys don't know me, I'm the guy from the kayak safety videos shown at the MLPA mtgs. Thanks, Ed

Ed, thanks for your participation in the MLPA process, you went above and beyond presenting safety videos on our behalf. I hope one of the La Jolla kayak regulars steps up who is fishing Saturday, and meets up with you. I will be on a skiff, otherwise I'd meet up with you, but I'll be monitoring CH. 72, give me a shout if you head out.

Thanks for the PM Tom,
So, what type of Irons? Tady? I was looking at the various models and it was a bit dizzying. Type 45? Any color recommendations. I'm going to be new to the Tady family, so stocking up is going to be costly. Any go to colors you guys recommend? I'm staying at a hotel. If I actually get a fish, I'm going to look funny going into the lobby in Gore-Tex with a YT bleeding in a bag. I'll take fish cleaning pics from the bathtub. Ed

Hike Bike & Kayak in La Jolla has Prowler 15's with rod holders. If you want to rent contact them at their Mission Bay store (858) 488-5599 and tell them you want a fishing kayak delivered to the La Jolla store.

For Irons about now, most guys are using heavier YOYO jigs.
I am sure many will post up what they like. But an old stand by is the blue and white SALAS 6Xjr. The Tady 45 is a surface Iron. Drop down, grind up, repeat. |

this is a good one to read.... its not just the color of the iron, but how you use it

friday we have some 5-8ft WNW groundswell (16-20second interval) showing up.....this could make things exciting at the LJ launch, don't count LJ out (always check it in person) just have a backup plan if you don't feel comfortable LANDING in the surf you see....and like everyone said above...heavy irons, 6x jrs are my fav also (B/W and birdshit). This time of year you can get away with just one or two rods and a handful of irons....unless you know the area trying to make bait is a waste of time right now.

Spectra Question
Thanks for the link to the yo yo article. I read it a while back but now I'm ready to give it a shot. I'll be going out tomorrow at about 6. So the question is: Should I put a flourocarbon leader between the spectra and the iron or just tie the spectra to the iron. I'm leaning toward a 40lb flourocarbon leader about 3 feet long tied directly to the iron and tied to the spectra with a swivel.
Also, if anyone wanted to pm me the location of the "Thanksgiving 09' Spot", I'd be eternally grateful. Thanks, Tom |

best launch spot?
Thanks for the all the input. I'm due to stop in at Bass Pro Shops and select some Yo-Yo able iron.
What is the best launch spot for La Jolla? I don't have cart wheels , so I'm hoping for an easy launch. If need be, I could get crazazy and get some wheels. I'm thinking I will rent a kayak, and bring my soft rack so I'm mobile. Mostly I catch bass on my home turf. But I'd rather work and skunk then catch a bass someplace else. Wouldn't be a terrible thing to bring in some bones, but damn do I have YT fever.

Finally!
So, I'm back in San Diego from the 15th to the 17th.
I didn't get to fish the last trip at all. Too much work, but this time, I'll be able to get time on the water no problem. Thanks to everyone on the board who have answered questions, and in particular, Tom for giving me his number to call and ask questions. Any last minute hotspots? I did get the yo-yo iron, and I'm hoping to be doing some clandestine fish cleaning in the hotel bath. Staying at the Ivy in the Gaslamp, so this could get interesting. Are there any hose down type facilities near the launch? My plan is to use a wheeled cooler, to bring in the fish, and use free hotel ice to keep a hoped for catch good until my return on Thursday.

There are no hose down facilities near the launch, unless you count the showers near the bathrooms. But nothing to clean a kayak or gear.
I like your optimism about having to deal with keeping your fish cold. Good luck! Lets hope you get one.

Okay, will be in SD again....Hoping to fish Wed. I thought I saw that someone had put up links to a weather site, but now, I can't see them.
How have the swells been? If it is knarly, I'm going to skip working the bay. Ed

For whatever reason, I can't get the La Jolla cam to work for me. Leaving shortly and need to figure out if the kayak comes with.

The pier swell for Wednesday is predicted to be 4 to 6 feet. Bring your bay gear just in case.

Now, same thing, big swell. I'll drive out, and check anyways. I could push fishing back to Thursday. Any case, yes, I brought my full box, so have bassing stuff and irons. Out of curiousity, is there a place near La Jolla or MB that you guys buy your bait squid?
