VHF Radio Help Por Favor
just wondering if i could save a little money and get away with a 2/.5 watt radio. i'll mostly be fishing LA/LB harbor, dana point a little, and newpor and huntington harbors. thanks.

The biggest drawback to handhelds is not power. It is the antenna height. Put one in a yak with line of sight and you probably are not utilizing the 5 watts. If you can return it, give it a try.

I dont know anything about how the transmit power thing works, i have a 1/5 myself. What i do know is that west marine sells vhf handhelds that they say are waterproof 9 out of 10 times :roll: . i was a little upset after spending 200 bones on a "waterproof model" . So i would recomend getting a standard horizon which west marine was very happy to exchange their pos for. great customer service not such a great product.
