when you bounce ball live bait do you set the bait drag or do you engage the reel? 8 to 12oz is prob to much weight for the bait drag right?

You keep your reel in gear. Since you're bouncing, I'd imagine you're mostly after halibut. The amount of drag you set when bouncing from halibut seems to be personal preference, and it will depend on other factors such as how heavy of a line you're using. You've got to have enough of a drag to get a good hook-set, yet allow for halibut surface freak-out that may happen.

If you'll really bouncing, 1lbs led ball and heavier is usually the weight you want to use.

I prefer to use a lever drag reel and use just enough drag to keep the clicker from sounding. That will allow it to make some noise when you get fouled with some kelp or grass.

Sometimes I use a star drag Diawa Sealine and put it in gear and then adjust the drag just hard enough for no clickers. More experienced fisherman have told me to set the drag properly and don't touch it on the water but I've always had a problem taking advice.

You really do need a minimum 1lb ball, otherwise it won't stay on the bottom even at a slow troll.
