Shark Attack at Catalina on 6/21

As reported on numerous websites and the news stations, a women was attacked by a GWS while she was kayaking in West Cove. Eyewitnesses put it as larger than her kayak.

Thank goodness......

The last thing we need is a juvenile eating up all the big ghosts and huge Yellowtail in West Cove.

Here it is:

Start the debate. Blue kayaks must attract sharks. So much for the red Hobie theory.

I don't know if anybody uses the Shark Shield here in SoCal. There are so few attacks in this area it probably isn't worth the investment. The guys farther up the coast might have a reason to use them

As I have said before: Curiosity bite on a swimmer and you are likely dead, curiosity bite on a yak and you live with a cool F'n story.

Some spots on the Pacific Adventure probably just opened up for this Wednesday Com'on!!! I'll be there with camera at the ready!

The last two incidences have been fatal, but I read somewhere that the majority of curiosity bites did not result in death.

Hmmm....I have 1 blue, 1 yellow, Clay has a blue, and my blue has already been bitten...does that mean I'm safe and the odds are now turned in my favor?

Can't imagine what was going thru her mind as she's swimming towards her party...guess it's time for a shark fin icon.

I think it might be commonly used around here, the guy i went out fishing with last week tried to removed it from the Yak while it was still turned on, he jumped 6 feet in the air when it shocked him , shark attacks are not a problem here either but some folks like to to have the added confidence of a SS, whether it works on the day is anybody guess, as the makers say it will not stop a shark in full attack mode.

People will use anecdotal reports and cherry-picked data to make authoritative pronouncements about shark behavior. After the guy in the red Hobie got hit the old internet was buzzing with theories about the Mirage drive flippers or the color being responsible. What about a common sense theory; like he was fishing in an area with a high density of GWS and every once in a while they will hit something that isn't their normal prey.
