BWE Tournement CANCELLED!
The Oceans Foundation has canceled the White Seabass Derby scheduled for June 28th. BWE was going to be a co-sponsor in this event and hold our own tournament at the same time. We now feel that it would be difficult to run the tournament as planned, so BWE has made the decision to cancel our end of the big fish tournament as well. WCW08 season starts on June the 28th. The awards ceremony for WCW07 winners will still be held on June 28th at La Jolla Shores. Details to be announced. |

This sucks. Not enough interest? Or are they just focusing on the freedivers since that is where they get the most entrants? The spearo event is this weekend.

That's a shame. I liked the WSB derby although I never really thought it was helping them much. I know they didn't get very many heads, even fewer with tags, and it always seemed to me somewhat strange to me to reward the killing of the very fish they are raising (not that I personally minded).

Guys,
I read of this cancelation and can't help but think it's the result of the freedivers basically blowing the yakkers out of the water. First off, in the last two derbys the freedivers gave back the winning prize money as a donation to Hubbs. Come on.... they are basically stocking the very fish were are going after. Whats going on this year with the Spearos is a 3 day WSB tourney this weekend with a BBQ tribute to Jack Prodanovich at Hubbs Sea World on Monday. This is a bragging rights ONLY Tourney. All entrance fees go to Hubbs ($30). There are about 150 people registered. ALL the major gun makers and dealers have stepped up and donated probably about $20 K+ in custom guns and other prizes for the raffle, again all money going to Hubbs. http://www.whiteseabassopen.com/ About 200# of WSB has been donated by spearos for the BBQ and Gabe of Naked Cafe http://www.thenakedcafe.com/ is gonna volunteer to cook it up in style. The spearos have always had the attitude that they are a "Tribe". Maybe if the yakkers got together once in a while over a few beers, there would not be so much in-fighting as witnessed by last years WCW. Also, they really need those heads for grow out and survival rates. I heard a chip was found recently in a very large fish that wasn't released all that long ago. That fish obviously had to have had optimum growing conditions. That's the kind of info that is golden to them. More and more fish are going to be having chips in them.
